Project Scope

MARKET GATE PEDESTRIAN BRIDGE – STEEL & CONCRETE WORKS

Keltbray are constructing a new 61m bridge across the main Sheffield to Leeds railway line. The steel, cable-stayed bridge sits on top of two reinforced concrete abutments and have a total span of 61 metres. The project also includes associated road junction improvements and public realm upgrades.

The construction of Market Gate Bridge utilises our integrated self delivery approach, utilising capabilities from our various business unit and providing maximum project control to Barnsley MBC via optimised self-delivery solutions.

MARKET GATE PEDESTRIAN BRIDGE – PRE-FABRICATION & TEMPORARY WORKS

The bridge deck was prefabricated offsite, to optimise quality and provide programme certainty. We have utilised our inhouse Wentworth House Partnership design service to provide an effective temporary works design. We have installed 24no x 750dia x 18m depth CFA piles, provided by our Piling teams.

MARKET GATE PEDESTRIAN BRIDGE – LIFTING

Keltbray Lifting Services have managed the lifting of the 3 bridge deck sections into place, completed in May 2023. Each bridge deck, weighing between 50 and 75t was lifted via a series of tandem crane lifts from two cranes (750t & 500t) to place the sections on bridge abutments and trestles to span the 61m across the Leeds – Sheffield main rail line.

With the bridge sections successfully installed, we are continuing to provide the civil, external, and public realm works alongside onsite fabrication, welding of the bridge sections is underway ahead of cable installation in June 2023.

Key challenges and solutions

Programme slippage

  • Challenge: Programme slippage was a major concern on this scheme, with the discovery of a main gas line where our piling mat should sit.
  • Solution: In collaboration with the client and the SU, we rephrased works to ensure the scheme progressed whilst we negotiated the diversion works.

Network Rail approvals

  • Challenge: Obtaining approvals from network rail in a timely manner.
  • Solution: We worked with our Rail teams to speed up the process of obtaining Network Rail approvals for key works over their assets. This ensured that all applications made to Network Rail were approved within programmed time scales.
