Project Scope

BRIDLINGTON SEA FRONT – ENGAGEMENT, PLANNING AND GROUND TESTING

Due to the project being let as a 2-stage tender, we were able to engage with East Riding of Yorkshire Council (ERoY), throughout the early contractor engagement period to influence project buildability.

Initially, there was limited design information available for road construction. Keltbray suggested the use of trial holes and CBR testing of drive improved design, which was subsequently accepted and amended.

The amended design considered newly provided ground information and although the planning process was elongated within the design stage, it ensured efficient onsite delivery without delay.

BRIDLINGTON SEA FRONT – SITE INVESTIGATIONS AND DISUSED UTILITIES

Upon site investigation we determined the position of several disused cellars across the project site. During previous town developments, statutory undertakers had laid their apparatus through these cellars (gas, electric & water).

Therefore, before we commenced any works we had to coordinate with these statutory undertakers and arrange for respective diversions. Keltbray reinforced cellars with structural steel beams whilst infilling others with foam mix concrete.

Additionally, whilst carrying out surveys, trial holes and ground testing, we discovered an existing drainage channel which incorrectly led to discharge outlets off the coast, unbeknown to ERoY. Following our surveys, we were able to intercept these drains and divert to the correct discharge location.

BRIDLINGTON SEA FRONT – PAVING AND PEDESTRIAN INFRASTRUCTURE

Paving works were undertaken on Garrison Street with a new paved area adjacent on Garrison Square which included new wave like benches and a timber art feature, proposed by Keltbray.

Paving, landscape, and high-quality seating areas were installed at The Crescent and Fort Terrace. At the end of the Esplanade joining Victoria Terrace, creating a new platform, and waiting areas for the Bridlington Land Train which operates along the promenades.

BRIDLINGTON SEA FRONT – COVID 19 RESTRICTIONS

To carry out our works, we reduced the width of several rides and implemented a one-way system around the promenade sea front, due to COVID-19.

Additional challenges resulted through our supply chain caused by inflation and resulting in higher lead times. This was counteracted by effective planning and implementing design alterations.

BRIDLINGTON SEA FRONT – AWARDS & RECOGNITION

Bridlington Sea Front Public Realm Project was awarded the Value Award at the Constructing Excellence 2021 awards, as well as being a finalist for the Integration & Collaboration Award.

Key Challenges and Solutions

Limited design information

  • Challenge: Limited design information for the construction of roads
  • Solution: Undertook trial holes and CBR testing of drive improved design

Impacted supply chain

  • Challenge: Impacted supply chain due to Covid-19, with inflation of certain products cost and risks of higher lead times
  • Solution: Implemented design alterations to permit a wider portfolio of permitted paving types delivering cost savings

Discovered cellars

  • Challenge: Managing third party infrastructure in accordance with our scope of works
  • Solution: Reinforced cellars with structural steel beams whilst infilling others with foam mix concrete

Disused utilities connections

  • Challenge: Discovered existing utilities connections within cellars upon site investigation
  • Solution: Coordinated with these statutory undertakers and arranged for respective diversions
